I come from a very “down to earth” family.
Not the “back to the land” sort but the “keep your feet on the ground, your nose to the grindstone, and your head outta the clouds” kind … where a “realistic” view of Life meant working hard for someone else, usually for modest pay, and having a boss tell you what to do and when to do it.
And in the middle of all this, there I was with a burning passion for fitness and all things health-related – and dreams of working for myself, training other people in exercise, nutrition, holistic health, and wellness. I was the “rebel son” in more ways than one; my father was a police officer, and I was, shall we say, at the opposite end of the spectrum.
My relationship with my father was anything but agreeable. Even when he’d deign to ask me about my interests, his eyes were already glazing over before I got a chance to answer. This went on for many years.
Then he got cancer.
Interestingly, when my dad got the diagnosis – Stage 3 cancer, spreading throughout his lungs, lymph glands, and adrenals…
He came to me with the news first.
Neither of us were prepared to accept the doctors’ prognosis of only 18 months left to live. So I laid out what we could do to combat his tumor NATURALLY. (After all, research shows that more than 50% of all cancers are lifestyle-influenced – caused by such things as smoking, alcohol consumption, poor stress response, acidity, and nutritional deficiencies.)
This exact point was the first time in over 30 years I felt my dad had finally accepted me, my beliefs, and my chosen path – the path I’d stayed on through thick and thin, through all the self-doubt (about whether this really was what I should do with my life) and lack of support from my family.
We’re now two years on, and Dad looks and feels healthier and more fit than ever! All this by making some simple changes of habit in his lifestyle, sleep, and diet.
It was a long time coming … but all the study, sacrifice, and hard work involved in following my heart has finally paid off in a way my family can appreciate.
You may face the same sort of challenges in chasing YOUR dream – anything from ambivalence to open hostility – so you have to just keep on believing in yourself even when those most influential and closest to you frown, look sideways, or disapprove.
Hold fast and true to your dream. Those who are meant to be a part of it will, sooner or later, be drawn by your conviction. Everyone else … well, love them but don’t listen to them.
Needless to say, I’m over the moon about not only my new relationship with my dad, and his acceptance (finally!) of my life and career choices, but his amazing climb back to health, too. My dad is now my biggest fan and supporter, and its really brought my parents closer together. And I couldn’t be happier!
