Everyone admires someone for one reason or another. Quite often the individuals we admire are people we read about but never meet.
A number of years ago I was having dinner with a friend. We were barbecuing in our backyard and Andrew Young’s name came up. Young was one of the inside workers with Martin Luther King Jr., who later went on to become the American Ambassador to the United Nations and then the Mayor of Atlanta, Georgia. I have followed his work and his career for years. I see him as a very wise, sincere, service-oriented individual. A person I would certainly enjoy meeting.
My friend mentioned he knew Andrew Young; he had worked with him on a few occasions. I immediately got a commitment from my friend to arrange a meeting with Young; I will definitely go out of my way to meet him.
Too often we admire a person for one reason or another but think it out of our reach to meet them. We may see these people who are in positions of power or authority as being inaccessible and that is not so.
The next time you catch yourself saying you would really like to meet him or her… do it. Don’t think you can’t – just think of how you can and do it.
In the early 60’s I flew to Chicago and spent an hour with Earl Nightingale. That meeting ultimately led me to completely change the course of my life. I eventually moved to Chicago and worked with Earl Nightingale for a number of years.
We had the pleasure of having Hugh O’Brian of Wyatt Earp fame as a guest in our home a couple of years ago. He explained how he went to Africa to meet Albert Schweitzer. That meeting resulted in O’Brian starting the Hugh O’Brian Youth Organization that is worldwide today and has helped thousands of young people develop leadership skills.
They are never too big to meet. They are usually beautiful people, and they could change your life. If you admire them, get to know them.
