Up until a few years ago, I was scared to drive on the highway.
This might not seem like a big deal for you, but it was for me.
I never had a reason to drive on the highways. I grew up in the city and spent decades being very comfortable getting around on foot, by bike, public transportation or having a partner do the highway driving.
I knew that if I was going to be comfortable driving on the highway, I would need to buy my own car, and have a good reason to drive on the highways.
It took getting divorced for me to get my first car.
Buying a car was more daunting for me than the purchase of my house or clinic, even though it was a fraction of the cost. This is because the car was a new symbol of my independence.
I would have the power to take myself wherever I want.
But I had to face my fear and drive through it.
My first big trip was to my friend’s cottage a couple of hours north of Toronto, which is one of my favorite places in the world. Getting there was worth busting through the wall of fear.
I was scared and had to focus all my conscious attention on where I was going and had to actively remember to breathe and relax along the way.
Finally, I arrived safely at my friend’s beloved cottage.
I explained to my friend that the mechanics of driving were easy for me; it was navigating a new route and the fear of getting lost that concerned me. She asked me, “So what’s the worst thing that would happen if you got lost?” This was a ‘Duh’ moment for me as I realized that, actually, it wouldn’t be that bad. If I did get lost, I could course correct. Simple.
This is such a good example of what it’s like when people are afraid of not knowing exactly how to get to their goal. All you need to know is your destination — the path and the details will always reveal themselves. Much like the signs along the highway, those details will be shown to you when you’re ready for the next step.
On the other side of fear is freedom. Now that I’ve faced my fears of driving on the highway, I am confident that I can get to wherever I need to go. Freedom is an incredible feeling.
Remember, your logic is dictated by your paradigm- your old programming. If something fits the old way of thinking, it’ll feel comfortable in its familiarity. But you won’t grow beyond what you think you’re capable of.
If you’re willing to experience some discomfort to grow, you are positioning yourself to win in a big way and reach those big goals.
If you’re not inspired, there is a greater chance of quitting at the first challenge. Goals are meant to help you grow and express more of the magnificent person you are.
When you make a committed decision to go for your big goal, you are driving on your metaphorical highway to freedom.
A worthy goal will excite and scare you. Buckle up and get comfortable being uncomfortable.
